About Course

The Bloom Fellowship: Youth Mental Health Leadership Program is a six-week learning experience designed to equip young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to promote mental health awareness and support within their communities.

Mental health challenges among young people are increasing globally, and many communities still lack accessible support systems. This program introduces fellows to the foundations of mental health, practical peer-support techniques, child and adolescent psychology, and effective strategies for advocacy and community engagement.

Throughout the fellowship, participants will explore how social, cultural, and environmental factors influence mental wellbeing, particularly within African and Nigerian contexts. Fellows will also learn how to recognize signs of psychological distress, respond ethically using Psychological First Aid principles, and guide individuals toward appropriate support systems.

Beyond theory, the program emphasizes practical action and leadership. Fellows will learn how to design mental health advocacy campaigns, use storytelling to challenge stigma, and engage schools and communities in meaningful conversations about emotional wellbeing.

A key component of the fellowship is the Bloom Implementation Project, where fellows design and execute a real-world mental health intervention in a school or community setting. This hands-on experience allows participants to translate knowledge into impact while developing leadership, collaboration, and project management skills.

By the end of the program, fellows will be prepared to serve as mental health advocates, peer supporters, and youth leaders, contributing to healthier, more supportive environments for young people.

Module 2: Psychological First Aid & Peer Support Systems
This module equips fellows with practical skills to provide safe, ethical, and supportive responses to individuals experiencing emotional or psychological distress. Participants will learn how to recognize early warning signs, communicate with empathy, and apply Psychological First Aid (PFA) principles in real-life situations. The module also emphasizes understanding personal boundaries, knowing when to refer individuals for professional help, and identifying available support systems within the community. By the end of this module, fellows will be able to confidently offer peer support while maintaining ethical responsibility and personal limits.

Module 3: Child & Adolescent Psychology + Bloom Program Orientation
This module introduces fellows to the psychological, emotional, and social development of children and adolescents. Participants will explore how young people think, feel, learn, and respond to the world around them at different stages of development. The module also examines how trauma, bullying, abuse, and adverse experiences affect behavior and emotional wellbeing in school environments. Fellows will learn how to recognize safeguarding concerns and respond responsibly and ethically. In addition, this module provides a complete orientation to the Bloom Program, including its goals, structure, implementation model, and expected impact in schools and communities. By the end of this module, fellows will better understand the needs of children and adolescents and gain clarity on how to successfully implement Bloom activities within schools.

Module 4: Advocacy Campaigns & Project Design
This module focuses on transforming knowledge into actionable mental health interventions. Fellows will learn how to design and implement advocacy campaigns that are relevant, culturally sensitive, and impactful within their communities. Participants will explore how to clearly define problems, identify target audiences, craft effective messages, and choose the right channels for engagement. The module also introduces practical project design skills, including planning, budgeting, and stakeholder engagement. By the end of this module, fellows will develop a Bloom Project Implementation Plan, which they will execute in schools or communities.

Module 5: Storytelling for Social Change
This module explores how storytelling can be used as a powerful tool for mental health advocacy, awareness, and social change. Stories help people connect emotionally, challenge stigma, and inspire action in ways that facts alone often cannot. Participants will learn how to craft compelling and ethical mental health narratives, communicate with authenticity, and adapt stories for different audiences and platforms including social media, public speaking, and written advocacy. The module also introduces trauma-informed storytelling principles to ensure that stories are shared responsibly and respectfully. By the end of this module, fellows will be able to create meaningful mental health content that educates, inspires, and encourages positive conversations within their communities.

Module 6: Leadership, Ethics & Sustainability
This module focuses on developing ethical, resilient, and impact-driven leaders in the field of mental health advocacy. Fellows will explore leadership principles, ethical responsibilities, sustainability strategies, and methods for evaluating the impact of their work. Participants will learn how to lead community initiatives responsibly, maintain professional boundaries, prevent burnout, and create long-term social impact through collaboration and accountability. This module also prepares fellows for the implementation and presentation of their Bloom Projects in schools and communities. By the end of this module, fellows will be equipped to lead with integrity, care for their own wellbeing, and sustain meaningful advocacy efforts beyond the fellowship program.
